Letter, 1863 Jan. 16, Orangeburg, S.C. to Samuel Dibble, Wilmington, N.C.

Letter, 16 Jan[uar]y 1863, from Dibble's mother during his Confederate military service reporting local news of family and friends in Charleston and Orangeburg, S.C. At time of this letter, Dibble was serving as a sergeant and lieutenant in the 25th S.C.V. (Edisto Rifles, Eutaw Regiment); Dibble's mother reports that she was anxious to hear from him and feared that he was sick, reports occassional regrets on having left Charleston but expresses acceptance due to current situation, and relates rumors that Charleston "will be attacked in less than a week" although some families recently evacuated from the peninsula expected to return to their homes by April. Dibble also reports operation of "a school for boys kept in the engine house by Rev. Whid[d]en," said to operate eight schools.
